The ENERGY STAR program has been a great success story.
As Electrical Contractor’s Craig DiLouie noted, the use of the mark propelled research and development and influenced customer preferences, leading to substantial energy savings and awareness.
“Since 1998, [the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency] estimates that ENERGY STAR certified lamps and luminaires have generated more than a trillion kilowatt-hours of energy savings,” he wrote. The EPA’s decision indicates “the tech has won the revolution and has entered a maturity phase.”
One of ENERGY STAR’s incentives was the use of rebates to promote their use in the marketplace. However, on December 31, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sunsetted ENERGY STAR specifications for lamps and luminaires, with a handful of exceptions. In its 2022 proposal, later approved, the EPA noted that reasons for sunsetting included diminished savings, the phase-out of utility incentive programs, and the widespread acceptance of LED technology.
Moving forward, these lamps and luminaires will no longer use the ENERGY STAR name or mark, which affects Keystone and other companies. In addition, these ENERGY STAR products will no longer qualify for energy rebates.
For Keystone specifically, this means our General Purpose A-Shape, BR, PAR, Spotlight, Decorative, and medium base Performance Series lamps will now not claim to be ENERGY STAR certified. However, though they will not qualify for rebates, they maintain the high standards we’ve established, including RoHS compliance, top-notch energy efficiency, and available T20 and T24/JA8 options.
As we work through older inventory on these bulbs, you may still see the ENERGY STAR logo on product boxes and etches, though the program is no longer applicable, and our lamps are no longer considered certified. Still, you can be assured that all Keystone lamps – like our portfolio of lamps, fixtures, power supplies, and controls – meet our high quality standards.
